Need-based aid

Financial aid a school awards because a family cannot pay the full cost, based on the financial information the family submits. Most boarding-school aid is this kind.

Why it matters

Aid is decided school by school, and international students generally receive less of it than U.S. students. Knowing that early keeps the school list realistic.

Who decides

Each school awards it from its own budget.
