F-1 visa

The U.S. student visa for full-time study at a certified school. Every international boarding student needs one, including students from countries that normally travel visa-free.

Why it matters

The visa, not the admission letter, is what lets your child enter the United States to study. Interviews are in person and appointment waits vary by country, so the application starts as soon as the I-20 arrives.

Who decides

A U.S. consulate decides it, after an interview.
